#After Life: 10 Moments Tony’s Dog Stole The Show In Season 1 -BB

Netflix’s After Life is the gut-wrenching tale of a man (Tony) who loses his wife (Lisa) to cancer. Throughout season one, we see Tony come to grips with no longer having his wife by his side and to cope he watches a video she left behind for him. In the video, she essentially reminds him of how to do life without her. And even with her inspiring and hopeful words, they fall on Tony’s ears for most of the season. In fact, life is so unbearable for Tony that he’s thought about ending his life but there was one thing holding him back: his beloved dog Brandy.

Brandy appears to be a German Shepherd (or a mix of a German Shepherd) and is Tony’s best friend now that Lisa is gone. She’s the dog he shared with Lisa, so one could assume he views her as his child. And although Brandy isn’t shown in every scene, she is without a doubt Tony’s anchor. Let’s take a look back at some of Brandy’s biggest moments (that had a lasting effect on Tony’s life).

10 WHEN HE CALLS HER USELESS

At the beginning of the second episode, Brandy is waiting and ready for her breakfast. She waits patiently for Tony to open her dog food can when Tony says, „If you could open a tin, I’d be dead now. But you can’t, can you? Because you’re useless.“ And while those words are deep, Tony gives Brandy a sweet pat on the back as she eats her food. It’s proof that although Brandy may be „useless“ in Tony’s eyes, she’s actually nothing of the sort.

9 SHE SAVED TONY’S LIFE AT THE BEACH

In episode three, Tony is watching another video of Lisa. She reminds him to not let himself go after she’s gone and to get outside for some fresh air. She brings up going to the beach because Brandy loves going to the beach and that’s exactly what Tony does.

Sadly, Tony doesn’t just go to the beach to watch his dog have a fun time. As soon as he steps on the sand, he looks out to the ocean and the realization that he could drown himself races across viewers‘ minds. It’s obvious Brandy senses something is off with Tony because instead of running around the beach playing, she sticks by Tony’s side and keeps an eye on him. But when Tony walks out into the ocean with all his clothes on, Brandy begins to whimper and bark to grab Tony’s attention. She’s almost like a spiritual wakeup call for Tony. She snaps him out of his darkest thoughts and ideas and brings him back to reality.

8 SHE WAS INCREDIBLY FRIENDLY WITH DAPHNE

Brandy is an overall sweet dog who probably misses Lisa as much as Tony does. Dogs (and all animals, really) can sense when something is off, which probably puts a great deal of pressure on poor Brandy’s fuzzy shoulders.

When Daphne came over to wash Tony’s dishes for the first time, she says „I absolutely love your dog,“ which makes Tony smile at his pup with pride and agree. She really is the sole reason Tony sticks around (and gave us six episodes in the first season). Later on, Daphne makes another appearance in Tony’s home but this time Brandy is snuggling her on the couch instead of her usual dog bed. Just take our hearts, Brandy!

7 SHE SAVED TONY FROM HIMSELF IN THE BATHTUB

In a word, Brandy is a hero. Like so many animal characters in the world, pets are often the unsung hero of it all. She may not be able to speak to her owner Tony but she sure can bark and annoy him enough to slap him out of whatever dumb thing he’s about to do.

At the beginning of the second episode, Tony is contemplating suicide while taking a bath. He grabs a razor blade and hesitates as he holds it over his wrist but at that exact moment, Brandy comes running in. She looks at him from the doorway and begins to bar. Is she Tony’s Guardian Angel or are her canine senses off the charts!? Nevertheless, her little face was enough to get Tony to stop what he was doing and get out of the tub.

6 WHEN SHE WOKE LISA UP WITH HER CUTENESS

At the end of episode five, Tony replays a video on his computer of the day he brought home Brandy. It’s not known if they were talking about getting a dog or if it was just an impulse purchase, but we see baby Brandy surprise Lisa as she slept. Tony filmed the entire adorable moment, which was truly the beginning of their happy little family. After all, is there a better way to wake up than by your husband and a beautiful puppy?

5 THAT TIME SHE ATE BAKED BEANS FOR BREAKFAST

Granted, this was not Brandy’s fault. In the premiere episode of After Life, Tony’s house (and life) is a mess. He has no dishes, no food, his home is absolutely cluttered. This proves how hard of a time he’s been having while grieving over Lisa.

Tony begins looking for dog food when he realizes he’s out and is forced to feed his dog one of two things: baked beans or vegetable curry. He ends up giving his dog the beans while he chugged the curry straight out of the can, but it was an adorably funny moment that set the tone for Tony and Brandy’s life as a duo.

4 SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHERE LISA’S TOMBSTONE WAS

It’s sweet how animals know what’s going on even when humans seem clueless. We see Tony visit Lisa’s grave often — so often that he even met a cemetery friend named Anne. But the first time we see Tony visit Lisa was very telling, whether viewers noticed it or not. Brandy ran straight to Lisa’s tombstone, knowing it’s where her former owner was laid to rest. Granted, it’s hard to tell if she knows what’s going on or not but it’s obvious she knows this is a special place for her and her dad Tony where Lisa’s name is brought up every day.

3 BRANDY x AUDREY HEPBURN

It’s always a touching moment when Tony turns off Lisa’s goodbye video and puts on videos of former, happier times. He took a lot of home videos of their fun together, mainly him pranking her to see what her reaction would be.

In the third episode, Tony’s had a hard day after Julian stole money from him the night before, so he watches a sweet video of Lisa and Brandy. Lisa dressed Brandy up in sunglasses, pearls, and a scarf, and called her Audrey Hepburn. What’s even cuter is that Brandy didn’t seem to mind.

2 SHE WAKES TONY UP EACH MORNING

Brandy truly is the uncredited savior of this series. She can’t talk or work, but she’s there for Tony when no one else is. In actuality, everyone rallies behind Tony because they know how truly depressed he is but Tony is too stubborn to take their help or their kindness. The only person (or pet) Tony can tolerate is his dog Brandy. She’s always there for him and is his shoulder to cry on. When Tony is weeping in bed watching videos of Lisa, Brandy usually barks to get him out of bed. Sure, she may just be hungry but it’s the alarm clock he needs!

1 WHEN SHE GETS IN TROUBLE FOR PLAYING WITHOUT A LEASH

In the first episode, viewers quickly realize Tony is a mess without Lisa. But when we see him playing fetch with Brandy in the park, we notice all hope isn’t lost. Tony obviously wants the best for his dog and enjoys getting sunshine when he can. Funny enough, a passerby scolds Tony for his dog not being on a leash, which of course, prompts Tony to insult his odor and weight, but it was sweet to see Brandy having a nice time with an owner she hasn’t seen smile in a long time.
